Verrtical lines which are present when the laptop is at BIOS level and remain static even in graphics mode are caused by failed tabs - connections between the circuit board at the back of the LCD and the glass panel. Excessive pressure to the edge of the LCD panel can cause the vertical lines to appear.

Some failures can be intermittent and the lines appear or disappear when pressure is applied to certain parts of the screen.

Vertical lines can also be caused by video circuit failures. The image may also appear with vertical lines on an external monitor. This type of failure will not be corrected by replacing the LCD panel.

Lines that change position or colour can also be caused by faults with the graphics card or video chip on the motherboard.
