LCD screens have one or more white light sources to provide the backlighting. These are situated at the edge of the LCD panel. The light source is commonly a cold cathode fluorescent tube, CCFL, which is driven by a inverter. Newer LCD displays are illuminated using light emitting diodes, LEDs.
A dark screen with a very faint image is a good indicator of backlight failure. In most cases the failure is caused by a faulty CCFL or inverter, although faulty video chips can also fail to switch on the inverter and result in similar symptoms. It is very difficult to diagnose the exact point of failure without specialist tools. Laptop LCD displays can have up to four CCFLs and a single failure can cause the inverter to shutdown completely, leaving a dark screen with a dim image.
There is no one backlight part that will cure the problem.
